Germany Qualifies for 2010 World Cup with Help from Match Analysis

EMERYVILLE, California - Germany qualified for the 2010 World Cup on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Russia thanks in part to a little help from Match Analysis. Match Analysis was hired by the German National Team this past month to help the 1990 World Cup champions prepare for their pivotal showdown with Russia, which would secure a place in South Africa with a victory by the Germans. Match Analysis analyzed game day video from four previous games of the Russian national team, providing key insights and recommendations.

"Our match data and video analysis was showing us that that Russians had to be broken down centrally along the back line, adding one extra pass where Germany would typically shoot" says Mark Brunkhart, President, Match Analysis. "It ended up being the key to the goal."

Miroslav Klose's 34th minute goal for Germany was scored when Lukas Podolski and Mesut Ozil combined on a nice combination to get behind the central back line and almost to the touchline before bringing the ball back with a pass to Klose, who placed the shot inside the near post. The goal would hold up on the road in Moscow and Germany was off to its 17th ever FIFA World Cup, courtesy of a little inside advice about getting behind the defensive back line with an extra pass (or two).
